Leading the Philippine energy industry with BESS

We started our venture into battery energy storage technology in 2018 when we acquired the 10 MW Masinloc Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of the Masinloc Power Plant from AES Philippines. The Masinloc BESS is the first battery energy storage facility in the Philippines and one of the first in Southeast Asia. Our acquisition of Masinloc BESS is a landmark milestone that drives the Philippine energy industry into a significant turning point towards a transition to renewable energy.

Today, San Miguel Global Power is poised to be one of the biggest operators of battery energy storage technology in Asia in terms of total installed capacity.

With the commercial operations of approximately 1,000 MW of BESS facilities across 32 locations in the Philippines, we are now ushering in a new era for the Philippine energy industry through significant improvements in grid reliability and the integration of more renewable power sources to the country’s diverse energy mix.

How it works

How it works

Our BESS facilities utilize advanced lithium-ion battery technologies that capture electricity produced by renewable and non-renewable sources to store for discharge at a later time. The battery technology also provides ancillary services to the grid that significantly improve its reliability by regulating fluctuations in power supply in a smart, fast, and efficient manner.

The smart and efficient services of BESS facilities allow for a more robust integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy to the grid. Our battery energy storage business is one of the ways we show our commitment to sustainable energy, as our BESS facilities also operate with zero emissions.

Locations

We are operating BESS facilities at 32 locations in the Philippines, across the regions of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Overall, we are putting up approximately 1,000 MW of BESS facilities, which will help ensure the reliability of the grid, especially in areas that are in most need of power quality solutions.

Broadening our impact

We are partnering with host communities of our BESS facilities in ensuring that the impact of our operations goes beyond providing clean and reliable power quality services to the grid. Through our San Miguel Global Power Foundation, we are working together with our stakeholders in identifying significant areas of development in the community.

One of these initiatives includes Project 747, a dynamic, participatory approach in environmental and livelihood development with each host community of all our 32 BESS facilities in the country.
